Shelter Island 10K Is Saturday

The publicists for the Shelter Island 10K, which is to be contested Saturday afternoon, said in an email earlier this week that “we are looking at another great field of athletes from the United States, Kenya, and Ethiopia.”
That elite runner list, expected to double as the race nears, included as of Monday the following: Linus Kiplagat, who won the Naivasha Easter Sunday half-marathon in Kenya in 58:41; Mary Wangui, whose personal best in the 10K is 32:22; Josphine Wambui Wanjiku, whose 10K personal record is 33:29; Margaret Wamahiga, with a personal record of 33:12; Katie Dicamillo of Providence, R.I., who topped the female division at Shelter Island in 2013, and Nicholas Filippazzo of Wantagh, who was the top American finisher in this race in 2016 and last year.
The former four-time Olympian and four-time New York City Marathon winner Bill Rodgers is expected to be on hand as well.
There will be a postrace complimentary Family Fun Festival at the American Legion Hall this year, which is to include “dancing in the street with D.J. Twilo, local artisan food trucks, a barbecue for all runners, a cash beer and wine bar, a photo booth, carnival games, a bounce house, and face painting for kids, raffle prizes, and more.”
The 10K course, described by Runners World as the country’s most scenic, is to start at 5:30 p.m. in front of Shelter Island High School.
As of earlier this week, 1,300 had registered. The entry fee is $40, $50 on race day. There will be a 5K too, the fees for which are $30 and $40. Further information can be had online at shelterislandrun.com.
