Softball Summary

The East Hampton High School softball team lost a first-round playoff game at Kings Park last Thursday as Lindsay Taylor, who recently broke Jessie Stavola’s career strikeout record (though Stavola took four years to amass her total, while it took Taylor five), struck out 13 during the course of a 7-0 one-hitter.

Casey Waleko, who gave up a two-run homer in a four-run fourth inning and a homer in a three-run fifth, was the losing pitcher. Sam Mathews finished up.

Erin Abran, who’s been coaching the team since its head coach, Lou Reale, was suspended several weeks ago for having committed a scheduling error, said East Hampton finished at 11-8 over all. She added that Kathryn Hess, the hard-hitting junior catcher, had been named to the all-county team, that Meghan Hess — one of East Hampton’s six seniors — Deryn Hahn, and Waleko had been named to the all-division team, and that Sam Mathews had been named to the all-league team.

Because of wrist problems, Waleko, who’s a ninth grader, was not as dominant a pitcher as she was expected to be this season. She’s been told by doctors to rest the wrist for a while, after which they’ll further examine the ligaments and tendons that have given her problems.

Boys Tennis

The Ross School and Hither Hills East were to have vied for the county boys tennis championship Tuesday at Smithtown East High School. The same teams contested last year’s final with Hills East coming out on top by a score of 5-2.

Earlier this season, in a nonleaguer played at Ross, the Thunderbirds prevailed by a like score, though Cole Katzter, one of the Cosmos’ best doubles players, was missing from the home team’s lineup.

At the time, Vinicius Carmo, Ross’s coach, said that his charges played better in the nonleaguer than they had in the 2010 final, and ventured that with Katzter “the outcome could have been different.”

Ross’s top doubles team, Henry Lee and Felipe Reis, the county and division champions, are to play in the state tournament, which begins today at the National Tennis Center. Richard Sipala, Ross’s number one, who lost 7-6, 6-1 to Hills East’s number one, Zain Ali, in the county individual tournament’s consolation match, which reversed a loss Ali sustained at Sipala’s hands in the April 2 nonleaguer, did not make the state tourney.

Best Ball Scramble

A best ball scramble golf tournament to benefit the St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church in Montauk will be held at Montauk Downs on June 14, beginning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Keeshan Real Estate and Don Bostrom are handling reservations.
