A motorcycle accident in Springs during the early-morning hours Friday left two riders injured, one of them critically.

East Hampton Town police said Matthew T. Menold, an 18-year-old who was listed in The Star's graduation supplement as one of Friday's graduates, was riding a Honda motorcycle north on Hog Creek Road when he hit a deer just north of Dogwood around 1:25 a.m. Mr. Menold and his passenger, Camaron W. Cassidy, also 18, were thrown from the bike. One of the two lives in Springs, and the other in East Hampton.

Mr. Cassidy was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, the nearest trauma center, because of his injuries. He is listed in stable but critical condition, police said. Mr. Menold was taken to Southampton Hospital. Police said he is expected to make a full recovery.

Capt. Chris Anderson said Friday morning that the two teenagers were leaving a friend's house when the accident occurred. "At this point in the investigation, there is no indication that speed played a role in the collision," he said. No charges have been filed.

Detectives are still investigating. Anyone with information about the accident has been asked to call the town police at 631-537-7575.
