Timothy A. Smith

    Timothy Allen Smith, a 27-year member of the Springs Fire Department whom friends called Chick, died on Nov. 30 of a heart-related illness. He was 51.

    His friends said he was “a born, bred Bonacker.” A lifelong resident of East Hampton and graduate of East Hampton High School, Mr. Smith was a carpenter who enjoyed boating, fishing, clamming, and watching Nascar races.

    He was always there for anyone who needed help, his family said. He was known to love being part of the Springs Fire Department, and was an active member always willing to help, according to Chief John Claflin. He “rose through the ranks of lieutenant, assistant captain, and assistant chief,” Chief Claflin said.

    Mr. Smith was born in Southampton on Dec. 18, 1960. He is survived by two brothers, James E. Smith of East Hampton and A.J. Keating of Bowling Green, Ky. He also leaves two nephews, Bryan Smith of Winter Beach, Fla., and Nicholas Smith of East Hampton, who said he “couldn’t ask for a better uncle. The world could use more people like him . . . he had a huge, loving heart.”

    A funeral service was held at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton on Friday, followed by a reception at the Springs Fire Department. A memorial service is being planned for a later date.
