Update: Fire Destroys Sagaponack Cottage

Update, Thursday, 3:15 p.m.: A fire at a house on Town Line Road in Sagaponack on Friday afternoon left the small cottage completely destroyed. 

Firefighters from the Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Sag Harbor, and North Sea Fire Departments were able to extinguish the blaze, with no injuries reported. There was no one at the house at the time of the fire; neighbors called 911. By the time firefighters arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames, according to Bridgehampton Fire Chief Jeff White.

A propane tank's delivery valve blew off during the fire and the propane that was released ignited, sending flames 40 feet into the air, said Chief White. 

The wind was blowing toward the water. "If the winds had been blowing differently, it would have been worse," he said, as other houses were nearby and could also have caught fire. He speculated that a primary wire may have shorted and fallen on the house, starting the blaze. The Southampton Town fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

Despite initial reports, the house was on the west side of the road, in Sagaponack Village and Southampton Town. 

Original, Thursday, 1:21 p.m.: Firefighters are working to extinguish a house fire on Town Line Road in Sagaponack on Friday afternoon. Public safety dispatchers reported multiple calls to 911 about a house fully engulfed in flames on the west side of Town Line Road, south of Daniel's Lane, at about 1 p.m.

The Bridgehampton Fire Department confirmed the reports. East Hampton, Sag Harbor, and North Sea Fire Departments were asked to assist. The Southampton Fire Department was called to the stand by at the Bridgehampton Firehouse. 

The Southampton Town fire marshal's office is responding to investigate.
