Village Beach Permits: Going, Going . . .

Feb. 1 is always a busy day at East Hampton Village Hall, and yesterday was no exception: The first day of February is the day that nonresident permits to park at the village’s ocean beaches go on sale.

If last year is any indication, the coveted stickers will be sold out in a month or so, even at $400 apiece, an increase of $25 over 2016. Last year, they were all snatched up by March 9.

In November, the village board also increased the number of nonresident parking permits from 3,000 to 3,100. The permits allow parking at the village’s five beaches — Georgica, Main, Wiborg, Egypt, and Two Mile Hollow — between May 15 and Sept. 15.

Nonresident permits can be purchased between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at Village Hall, by mail (attention Sue Dayton), or online at easthamptonvillage.org. In the highly unlikely event that any are left after Memorial Day, they can be picked up at the Main Beach office on weekends through June.

Nonresidents must provide, in addition to a check for $400 payable to Inc. Village of East Hampton and including the signer’s telephone number, a valid vehicle registration, a copy of the signer’s driver’s license, and a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Residents must provide a valid vehicle registration, a street address and phone number, and a self-addressed stamped envelope. If property is not listed in the resident’s name (i.e. a limited liability corporation or trust), they must include papers showing their involvement in the entity.

Anyone renting a car must provide a copy of their driver’s license with a notation that they have a rental car.

Daily parking permits for weekends and holidays at Main and Two Mile Hollow Beaches also cost more this year, $30 per day, up from last year’s $25.  They can be paid for only at the entrance to the Main Beach parking lot. Daily parking at those two beaches is available every day unless the lots are full, but are limited to 60 at Main Beach on weekends and holidays. Weekend and holiday permits for Two Mile Hollow are limited to 40.

A code amendment adopted by the village board in November clarified requirements for resident beach parking permits by making people who are shareholders in a housing cooperative eligible, as well as those related by blood or marriage to residential property owners. At the same time, the board eliminated eligibility for domestic employees residing with village property owners.

Town beaches also require valid parking permits, with an unlimited number of nonresident stickers available for $375. Nonresident permits must be purchased annually. Beachgoers can also pay by the day at Atlantic Beach in Amagansett, on weekdays only, excluding holidays. The cost is $20.

Town parking permits are available in person between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at Town Hall, or by mail, addressed to the town clerk. Residents and nonresidents alike must provide a copy of a valid vehicle registration, a copy of their driver’s license, a telephone number, and a self-addressed stamped envelope if applying by mail. Residents must also provide the street address and owner of the property as listed on a tax bill, as well as proof of residency. Year-round renters must be registered to vote here or have their local street address on their vehicle registration.
