West Earns State Berth

    In postseason competition this past weekend, East Hampton High’s Ashley West qualified for the state indoor track meet on March 3 by placing third in the state qualifier 600-meter race in 1 minute and 40.24 seconds. As a result, she’ll run with the inter-sectional relay team, Shani Cuesta, West’s coach, said.

    The boys swimming team placed fourth in the league meet at Hauppauge, despite having to forfeit points in diving, “the best finish we’ve had in three years,” said the coach, Jeff Thompson.

    Among those with outstanding times that day, said Thompson, were the three relay teams — Dan Hartner, Chris Kalbacher, Adam Heller, and Paul Dorego in the 200 medley; Hartner, Thomas Brierley, Dorego, and Trevor Mott in the 200 free, and Mott, Robert Anderson, Rob Rewinski, and Brierley in the 400 free. The county meet is to be held Saturday at Suffolk Community College-Brentwood at 2 p.m.

    Deilyn Guzman of East Hampton’s boys indoor track team placed fourth in the state qualifier’s 300-meter race, just missing a relay berth in the state meet, said the team’s coach, Chris Reich.

    And, finally, Lucas Escobar, a sophomore who wrestles at 106 pounds, fell one match shy of all-county status at the county meet at the State University at Stony Brook, winning two matches and losing two. Mike Peralta, a senior who was to have represented East Hampton at 145 pounds, was scratched because of a nagging wrist injury.

    Escobar won a rubber match with Connetquot’s Eddie Hart to begin with, decisioning him 7-4, before losing 8-0 to the top seed, Ward Melville’s Nick Piccininni, who had pinned Escobar in 1:10 at the Sprig Gardner tournament here in 2010.

    On the second day, in the wrestlebacks, Escobar “teched” North Babylon’s Brandon O’Neil 15-0 in the second period, but Harborfields’ Andrew Attivissimo, who had already had two wins over the Bonacker in the regular season, put him out of the tourney as the result of a 7-4 decision.
