Bits and Pieces 06.24.21

Tue, 06/22/2021 - 13:45
Joel Ross will be performing with his Parables Octet at the Arts Center at Duck Creek on Saturday.

For Young Musicians
The Sag Harbor American Music Festival has announced its Young Musicians Initiative, a competition for cash prizes, paid performances, and professional development opportunities, open to Suffolk County residents ages 15 to 26.

Aspiring musicians can apply in any or all of four categories: vocal, instrumental, band/ensemble, and songwriting/composition. The artist with the best overall submission will record with the Grammy Award-winning producer Cynthia Daniels at Monk Music Studios.
The deadline for submissions at sagharbormusic.org is Wednesday. The application fee is $5 per category.

Jazz at Duck Creek
The Arts Center at Duck Creek will open its 2021 music season with two free jazz concerts this weekend. Joel Ross, a vibraphonist and composer, will perform new and original music with his Parables Octet on Saturday at 5 p.m. With roots in a Chicago church family, he draws from gospel, modern composition, and the history of jazz composition.

In addition to Mr. Ross, the octet includes Immanuel Wilkins, alto sax; Maria Grand, tenor sax; Marquis Hill, trumpet; Kalia Vandever, trombone; Sean Mason, piano; Rick Rosato, bass, and Craig Weinrib, drums.

Mr. Ross will also serve as part-time curator for the series. His first selection, Maria Grand, a saxophonist and composer, will perform Sunday at 5 p.m. with Rashaan Carter on bass and Savannah Harris on drums.

‘The Last Waltz’
Hamptons Doc Fest and the Southampton Arts Center will present an outdoor screening of Martin Scorsese’s “The Last Waltz” on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. in the arts center’s garden.

The film documents the last concert by The Band, which was performed on Thanksgiving Day, 1976, in San Francisco. Called “the single greatest concert movie of all time” by Rolling Stone magazine, it features such iconic guest artists as Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, Neil Young, Ringo Starr, and many others, in addition to Richard Manuel, Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, and Garth Hudson of The Band.

A performance by the band JL Rolls the Dice will precede the screening at 7:30. Tickets are $15, $10 for arts center members. Beach chairs or blankets are welcome and encouraged.

LongHouse Benefit
Tickets for LongHouse Reserve’s summer benefit, which will take place on July 24, are now on sale on its website. While there will be no sit-down dinner this year, food and drink will be available as guests circulate around the 16-acre grounds in East Hampton. The promised “non-stop fun and tremendous good vibes” will be amplified by live music, and items from the LongHouse Shares Artsy auction will be on view before it closes that evening. Tickets start at $1,250.

Drag Brunch
Our Fabulous Variety Show, a theater troupe based in Southampton, will present “Drag Brunch” starring Naomi, billed by the company as “the Crown Jewel of the Hamptons,” on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Inn Spot on the Bay in Hampton Bays. Naomi will be joined by Aunt Barb and OFVS players in a show of drag routines, comedy, and dancing.

Tickets, which include an entrée and beverage as well as the show, start at $35 and can be secured through the company’s website. Seating will be assigned; performances are weather-dependent. A second drag brunch will take place on July 18.

Comedy at Guild Hall
Guild Hall is celebrating the return of night life with shows of live comedy by Colin Quinn next Thursday at 8 p.m. and Mike Birbiglia on July 3. As evidence that laughs have been in short supply the past 15 months, both shows, originally set to take place outdoors, sold out quickly.

The good news is that Mr. Quinn's show has been moved indoors so that tickets are once again available. In addition, while his July 3 performance is still sold out, indoor performances by Mr. Birbiglia have been set for July 9 and 10 at 8 p.m. Tickets for the shows, available on Guild Hall's website, are $65.

This article was modified from its print version after Guild Hall announced the move of certain performances indoors to make more tickets available.
