Tue, 07/06/2021 - 11:31
The One Ocean Film Tour, a program of eight short ocean-related films, will touch down at the Southampton Arts Center on Sunday.

Dance Fest and Films
A new dance festival and a program of ocean-related short films will be held this weekend on the lawn of the Southampton Arts Center. “Lawn Dances,” the center’s first of a planned annual dance festival, will feature contemporary New York-based choreographers who have been invited to reimagine their work on its outdoor stage on Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 5.

Saturday’s program will include works choreographed by Jasmine Hearn, Jodi Melnick, and Loni Landon. Sunday’s performances will be choreographed by Baye & Asa, Kayla Farrish, and Christopher Williams.

The performances, which are free, have been programmed by Sasha Okshteyn, a performance producer, and Ms. Landon. Registration is on the center’s website.

In celebration of World Ocean Day, the center will present the One Ocean Film Tour, a program of eight short films focused on ocean conservation, surfing, diving, exploration, and the aquatic environment, on Sunday at 8:15 p.m. Guests have been encouraged to come at 7:30, when the gates open, and take chairs, blankets, and picnics. Tickets are $15, free for those 12 and under.

Music at Duck Creek
The Arts Center at Duck Creek in Springs will present a performance by Benjamin Louis Brody and Alex Weston on Saturday afternoon at 5.

The composers will explore the intersection of acoustic elements and processed sounds. Through looping, sonic manipulation, and other processes, they will transform their instruments’ recognizable sounds into new experiences.

Mr. Weston composes music for concert works and film scores. His credits include “The Farewell,” a film by Lulu Wang that premiered at Sundance in 2019; “The Affair” (Showtime), “Jane Fonda in Five Acts” (HBO), and others.

A musician and sound artist, Mr. Brody has composed the music for “Floating Into Infinity,” a ballet, and many orchestral works for the Chelsea Symphony. His work has been featured on BBC Radio, WNYC’s “New Sounds,” and other media outlets.

Call for Performers
The Watermill Center has issued a call for East End community members to participate in rehearsals for “Get Wreck” and “Fan Dance,” two improvisational dances created in 1978 by Andy de Groat, who worked frequently with Robert Wilson, the center’s founder.

Catherine Galasso, whose father, a composer, collaborated with Mr. de Groat, has recreated the pieces, which will be presented at Guild Hall July 29 through July 31.

Rehearsals will begin outdoors at the center next Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m., when Ms. Galasso will lead a workshop with the entire group, and continue on Friday, July 16, and July 18, 21, 22, and 24. Participation is open to actors, musicians, and "anyone who likes to dance." No professional training is required. Participants must attend at least five of the six rehearsals.

Those interested in taking part have been asked to email Ms. Galasso at [email protected].

Memoirs and ‘Camelot’
As part of its Lifelong Learning series, sponsored by AARP Long Island, the Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor will present “Writing Your Life Story,” a free virtual writing seminar led by Will Pomerantz, the theater’s associate artistic director, next Thursday at 7 p.m. A storyteller, playwright, and director, Mr. Pomerantz will help students to access their creative writing skills in order to tell their own stories in their own words.

Bay Street has also announced that tickets are now on sale for its outdoor staged concert production of “Camelot,” which will be presented in a field in Bridgehampton starting on Aug. 5. Tickets start at $45 and are available on the theater’s website and through its box office.

Broadway in Water Mill
Broadway Out East, a series of performances by Tony, Grammy, and Emmy nominees, will launch next Thursday at Calissa restaurant in Water Mill, with performances at 5 and 7:30 p.m. by Clay Aiken, an actor and singer who made his Broadway debut in 2008, five years after he was runner-up in season two of “American Idol.”

Subsequent programs will star Elizabeth Stanley, Jessica Vosk, Lilli Cooper, Brandon Victor Dixon, Orfeh and Andy Karl, Joshua Henry, and Tituss Burgess. The series is produced by Justin Smith, concertmaster of “Dear Evan Hansen” on Broadway. Tickets, available on the restaurant’s website, start at $75.
