The Art Scene 10.12.23

Mon, 10/09/2023 - 15:36
Gabriele T. Raacke's "Fish Bowl," a painting from the 1990s, can be seen at Ashawagh Hall in Springs.

Canvas and Glass
"New and Never Seen," a solo show by Gabriele T. Raacke of seven never-before-shown oil paintings from the 1990s as well as new glass paintings and glass prints, will open at Ashawagh Hall in Springs on Friday, with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m.

The figurative oil paintings include "Fish Bowl," a whimsical, textured canvas depicting three fish diving into a bowl that looks more appropriate for soup. Ms. Raacke's reverse-painting pieces include 17 figurative glass paintings in her fairytale style, and 16 glass prints.

The exhibition will be open Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.

Lawrence and Loschen
"Abstract Meditations," a show of paintings by Dennis Lawrence and Stephen Loschen, opens Thursday at the Lucore Art Gallery in Montauk and will remain on view through Oct. 31. A reception will be held Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m.

While both East End artists are committed to abstraction, Mr. Loschen creates bold forms and high color contrasts to build hard-edged compositions that have a Pop quality. Mr. Lawrence uses a more muted palette to make forms with soft edges and compositions with multiple layers.

Mr. Lawrence is also a woodworker who builds custom furniture; Mr. Loschen is a sculptor who creates large pieces with found objects.

Gussow Retrospective
Sue Ferguson Gussow, professor emerita at the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of the Cooper Union in Manhattan, has a retrospective exhibition starting Thursday at the college's Arthur A. Houghton Gallery.

The show includes 39 oil paintings and 47 charcoal and pastel drawings by Ms. Gussow, who has a home and studio in Amagansett. The works range in date from her student days to as recently as the past summer.

The artist, who studied at Cooper Union from 1953 through 1956, focused on the human figure at a time when Abstract Expression was ascendant. The figure has been a principal area of interest throughout her career.

The exhibition will run through Nov. 17.

Film and Reception
Prior to a 5 p.m. reception for its current exhibition, "Heroines of Abstract Expressionism," the Southampton Arts Center will screen "Figures Transformed," a film by Lana Jokel about three artists who exhibited together at the arts center last summer, on Saturday at 4 p.m.

The work of Deborah Buck, Hal Buckner, and Elizabeth Strong-Cuevas uses the figure as its central imagery, but in very different ways. Ms. Buck has called her anthropomorphic and imaginary figures "nature on steroids," while Mr. Buckner focuses on the female figure, starting with line drawings eventually cut out of aluminum.

Strong-Cuevas, who died in March, depicted the human head in works that explore inner consciousness, outer space, and communication through space and time.

Colors of Light
"Night and Day: Carl Bretzke and Viktor Butko," an exhibition of plein-air and studio paintings, will open at the Grenning Gallery in Sag Harbor with a reception on Saturday from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

As the gallery said, artists who paint from direct observation understand that scenes change depending on the quality of light. Man-made sources of light figure in many of Mr. Bretzke's paintings, such as "Division Street at Night," which is illuminated by a car's headlights and streetlights.

While Mr. Butko, who lives on Shelter Island for six months a year, often paints after dark, he is most interested in natural light sources, as in "April's Moon, Shelter Island."

The exhibition will continue through Nov. 12.

Four at LTV
"Heart Full," an exhibition of work by Andrew Bailey, Abby Abrams, Dorothy Kopelman, and Haim Mizrahi, is at LTV Studios in Wainscott through Oct. 30. A reception will take place Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m.

A Renewed Focus on Fresh Fish

Dock to Dish, a restaurant-supported fishery cooperative founded in Montauk in 2012, has new owners and a renewed focus on getting fresh-from-the-boat seafood directly into the kitchens of restaurants across the East End and the New York area. And the fact that most of the owners are also fishermen doesn’t hurt.
