Artist Versus Canvas at Sara Nightingale

Mon, 04/10/2023 - 14:22
Jennifer Cross's "Imaginary Studio" will be at the Sara Nightingale Gallery in Sag Harbor.

"Showdown," an exhibition of work by seven artists, organized by Christa Maiwald and Sara Nightingale, will open on Friday at the Sara Nightingale Gallery in Sag Harbor, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. It will remain on view through May 14.

Merriam-Webster defines a showdown as "a decisive confrontation or contest." With respect to the exhibition, it refers to the faceoff between the artist and the literal or metaphorical blank canvas, the site where ideas and feelings are wrestled into shape.

The show spans both abstraction and representation, with Denise Gale, Janet Goleas, Sue Heatley, and Claire Watson in the former category, and Deborah Buck, Jennifer Cross, and Ms. Maiwald in the latter, but with significant variations within each.

Say Cheese (or Caviar), Day or Night

Self Provisions, a storefront attached to Cavaniola’s Gourmet Cheese in Sag Harbor, is “always open,” as is proclaimed by an illuminated sign on the wall at the entrance. Two large, brightly lit vending machines dominate the space, with offerings ranging from sea salt crackers and slabs of French butter to jars of caviar and curated gift boxes — and, of course, cheese.
