A Holiday Party and Dance Doc

Tue, 12/10/2024 - 10:40
Reilly Rose, an East End-raised singer-songwriter now based in New York, will perform holiday songs at The Church in Sag Harbor.

The Church will kick off the weekend with a community holiday party Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. Reilly Rose, an East End-raised, New York-based singer-songwriter, will perform holiday songs, and snacks will be provided by L&W Market, Carissa’s Bakery, and others. Tickets are $7, $5 for members of the Sag Harbor venue, and include one complimentary drink ticket and free food.

This will be the last opportunity to bid at The Church’s silent auction, which features gifts from Geek Hampton, Sag Harbor Cinema, Bay Street Theater, Lulu restaurant, Provisions, and more.

The Church’s Insight Sunday series will welcome Nick Whelan, an interdisciplinary artist who primarily uses music to inform his filmmaking, on Sunday at noon. The program will begin with a screening of Mr. Whelan’s short film “Akrowa,” which will be followed by a discussion about the pathos behind the imagery. The film follows Akrowa, an ensemble from Ghana that has performed its definitive version of Ga music and dance at that nation’s most significant occasions and for many foreign dignitaries, among them former President Barack Obama.

Mr. Whelan, who was influenced by the early films of his grandfather, D.A. Pennebaker, has also made short films about the East End artists Mary Ellen Bartley and Rocco Liccardi. Writing about the transitions in his films, he has said, “I love to use motion, color, foreground objects, blurs, and all kinds of other techniques to make a transition feel seamless.”

Tickets are $10, free for Church members, with registration in advance required.

The Sweet Smell of Nostalgia at Sagaponack General

Stepping into the new Sagaponack General Store, which reopened yesterday after being closed since 2020, is a sweet experience, and not just because there’s a soft-serve ice cream station on the left and what promises to be the biggest penny candy selection on the South Fork on your right, but because it’s like seeing an old friend who, after some struggle, made it big. Really, really big.
