Paintings and Floppy Discs at the White Room

Now at the White Room Gallery in East Hampton are "Poetry in Motion," paintings by Stuart Yankell, and, in the Black Room, paintings by Taylor Smith. A reception will be held Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Mr. Yankell's subjects include dancers, musicians, surfers, and bustling cafes. His strokes, using large brushes attached to poles, are broad and visceral, resulting in paintings that, when seen up close, appear abstract, but crystallize at a distance into figures in motion.

Interested in discarded technology and consumerism, Ms. Smith creates paintings on multiple floppy discs mounted on custom-built panels. Her subjects include pop cultural icons such as Marilyn Monroe and David Bowie, as well as skulls, classical figures, and boomboxes.

The exhibition will run through Oct. 13.
