For Harris-Walz

Editorial

For decency. For rationality. For science. For truth.

For civil servants, from the U.S. Postal Service to the Department of Education, just doing their job. For teachers, from universities to elementary-school classrooms, who in a free society should not be made to curb their curriculums to others' religious agendas.

For universal pre-K.

For trans men and trans women who don't feel safe.

For Muslim Americans who don't feel safe.

For Puerto Rican Americans who don't deserve to be denigrated.

For honest, industrious legal immigrants from Sudan, Haiti, Pakistan, Sri Lanka — and all the nations of the global south — who don't deserve to be called names or accused of crimes because they came to America to work and find freedom.

For all the civil rights campaigners of the 1950s and 1960s who put their lives on the line to defend the right to vote. For the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect and expand voting rights. For poll workers and election boards putting in the workaday sweat equity to safeguard fair elections. For the rule of law, and the principle that no one is above the law.

For sane, pragmatic, common-sense gun control.

For reproductive freedom. For women's right to abortion.

For public broadcasting and public radio.

For competence. For real-world experience in the courtroom and in the governor's mansion, doing the actual work to address immigration and health care reform. For the Affordable Care Act.

For pragmatic reasons. For a higher minimum wage and lower prescription drug costs. For relief from predatory student loans. For policies based on research rather than our darkest paranoid fantasies.

For the little guy. For consumer protection. For corporate accountability. For the preservation of the national parks, which must not be exploited for oil or any other corporate profit motive.

For the Earth. For clean-energy industries over fossil fuels. For green jobs. For the Paris Accords.

For NATO. For the defense of democracy in Ukraine. For a bulwark against the spread of autocracy around the world.

For a vision of America that acknowledges our strength, in all things, comes from our diversity.

For the future. For progress.

We are for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
