How It’s Done

At a time when our government at the highest level is trolling the world — with a series of stunt cabinet-appointment provocations that threaten education, public health, social services, commerce, and national security — East Hampton Town’s efforts to help Montauk senior citizens access their medications come as a reminder that good governing at the local level is more essential than ever.

Montauk’s only pharmacy, White’s Drug and Department Store, closed at the end of October, leaving older adults — including many who can no longer drive — in the lurch when they need to get prescriptions filled. Frank Calvo, the longtime pharmacist at White’s, is working diligently to make sure the need is addressed with a new facility on Montauk’s Main Street. And, in the interim, East Hampton blasted out a timely reminder  this week to older residents that the town can help by picking up and delivering medications right to their homes. The phone number to call is 631-324-4443. More details on the Senior Shopping Assistance Program can be found elsewhere in this week’s Star.

Good on you, East Hampton Town, for recognizing the need and reaching out proactively.

And P.S. — If any Montauk Friends of Erin bigwigs are reading this, we’d like to nominate Frank Calvo to be the next grand marshal of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
