Bridgehampton School Has First Covid Case; 20 to Quarantine

Tue, 10/27/2020 - 18:41
The Bridgehampton School closed early on Tuesday following report of a Covid diagnosis in a student but will reopen tomorrow.

Bridgehampton School District officials on Tuesday closed the school midday after a parent reported early in the day that their child had tested positive for Covid-19.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services advised school officials that 10 adults and 10 students will have to quarantine. It is the first confirmed case of the virus at Bridgehampton.

According to Robert Hauser, the district superintendent, the student attends class in one of the modular classroom buildings outside the main building. The 10 adults quarantining include not just full-time teachers but also related service providers such as therapists, he said.

“We received clearance from the [Health Department] to open school tomorrow as usual,” Mr. Hauser said.

The School Covid Report Card, a state database that is updated daily, indicates that there was one “lab reported case” of the virus in a student based on residency in the district, but that student does not actually attend the school.

Bridgehampton becomes the fifth South Fork public school district, and sixth school over all, to have a confirmed case of Covid-19. East Hampton, Springs, Montauk, Sag Harbor, Southampton, and the Ross School have each had at least one case in a student or teacher.
