“Freaky Friday” in Southampton
When they switch bodies, an overworked mom and her teenage daughter literally spend a day in each other’s shoes in “Freaky Friday: The Musical,” which the Black Box Performance Project will stage at the Southampton Cultural Center on Friday, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m. and Dec. 21 at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets for the show, which stars actors from across the East End, are $15 for students, $20 for adults.
Holiday Central
The Hampton Library in Bridgehampton will be holiday central this week, with lots of opportunities to make gifts or holiday decorations.
Kids in sixth grade and up can make sugar scrubs tomorrow from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and travel mugs Tuesday through Friday, Dec. 20, from 3:30 to 5. Mini magnets will be the D.I.Y. project for kids 8 to 12 next Thursday at 4 p.m.
On the decorating front, watercolor snowflake paintings are on the agenda tomorrow at 4 p.m. for ages 4 and up. On Saturday, the library will provide the gingerbread cookies and materials to decorate them from noon to 4 p.m. Make sure to save a spot for this one, in particular, as supplies are limited.
Kids will trace their own outlines to make life-size gingerbread people on Friday, Dec. 20, at 4 p.m. That evening at 6:30, the library will screen Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” rated PG, for grades six and up.
Family Time at the Parrish
Families will learn how to decorate a holiday cottage that doubles as a craft box in a holiday workshop on Friday, Dec. 20, at the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill. The fee is $10 for adults, $5 for museum members, and includes light refreshments. Children get in free.
Looking ahead, the museum will offer a winter landscape-painting workshop on Dec. 26 and a holiday still-life workshop on Dec. 27 for kids 6 and older. Each meets from 1 to 3 p.m. and costs $40, or $30 for museum members.
Advance registration is required.
For the Birds
For those who enjoy watching birds on a chilly winter day, the South Fork Natural History Museum’s bird-friendly tree-decorating workshop for families on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in Bridgehampton will be a gift that keeps on giving. Participants will use seeds, dried fruits, and other items to make “ornaments” that resident birds will go wild for. Take a box to carry yours home. There is a $5 materials fee for the workshop, and signing up ahead of time is required.
Holiday Kids Club
Given that this year’s school Christmas vacation is a full two weeks long, parents may want to sign up early for a morning Kids Club at the Children’s Museum of the East End in Bridgehampton. The program, for ages 4 to 7, will include a different project each day: menorahs and latkes on Dec. 23, cookie decorating on Christmas Eve, ceramics on Dec. 26, candle making on Dec. 30, bread making on Jan. 2, and quill-and-ink art on Jan. 3. It runs from 9:15 a.m. to noon and costs $65 per day, or $50 for museum members.
On Saturday, busy adults can drop kids ages 4 to 10 off at the museum for a gift-making workshop with Aaron Goldschmidt of Shine from 10 a.m. to noon. The cost is $75 per child, including all materials, and $37.50 for each additional sibling. Registration is with Mr. Goldschmidt at [email protected] or 212-414-5427.
Gingerbread Wars
If you think gingerbread houses are only for little kids, you probably haven’t had the chance to make one recently. High school students have been invited to brush up on their design skills and take their holiday spirit to the East Hampton Library’s annual gingerbread house competition next Thursday from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Teams will work together to vie for the prize.
A snowman story time and craft for kids 4 to 6 happens on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Another story and craft session next Thursday at the same time for ages 3 and up will feature winter classics by Jan Brett and gingerbread cookie decorating.
Kids 6 and older will make mini stocking cap ornaments in a workshop on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Advance sign-up is required for most programs.
Lots to Do in Sag
Cake pops, soap making, and an introduction to dance are among the activities on the schedule this week at the John Jermain Memorial Library in Sag Harbor.
On Saturday, Wally the dog will be on hand to listen patiently as kids read to him from 10 to 11 a.m. That day from 2 to 3:30 p.m., a middle school workshop will have sixth through eighth graders making mini bars of soap in colors and scents of their own choosing. Wrapping supplies will be available, too, for this perfect little gift.
Two workshops on Saturday morning will introduce little ones to the beauty of dance. A class for ages 2 and 3 will run from 10:30 to 11. One for ages 4 and 5 begins at 11. Participants’ caregivers have been asked to register in advance and for children to arrive in comfortable clothing or dance attire.
“Intent” bracelets and key chains, created with a word that has special meaning for the maker, will be the project at a workshop on Sunday at 1 p.m.
On Wednesday, little ones ages 2 to 5 can listen to a reading of Jeffrey Burton’s “The Itsy Bitsy Snowman” and then make a snowman at 10:30 a.m. Snowmen will make a second appearance at the library on Friday, Dec. 20, at 3 p.m., this time in the form of cake pops at a workshop for kindergartners through fifth graders led by the Baking Coach.
Looking ahead to the next weekend, families may want to reserve a spot now in a family gingerbread house workshop at the library on Dec. 21 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. There will be enough space and supplies for 15 families or groups of four or fewer.
Frosty, Woody, and Friends
The Amagansett Library will show “Frosty the Snowman” and “Toy Story That Time Forgot” tomorrow at 6 p.m. to families with children 4 and older.
Valentino, an American Kennel Club-certified canine good citizen, will be at the library on Saturday at 11 a.m. to read with kids. On Sunday, there will be lots of materials on hand for kids who want to drop in starting at 1:30 p.m. to make their own cards.
More Gingerbread
The Montauk Library has invited families to build and decorate gingerbread houses on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There are materials enough for just 20 families, so advance registration is a must.
While they’re at the library, families can also take photos in front of a green screen and drop in whatever festive backdrop they like from 11 a.m. till 4 p.m.
