The East Hampton Town Police Department has given the all-clear signal at the Amagansett School after a bomb threat was received by email just before 9 a.m. Wednesday. The school — where the day's classes were just beginning — was immediately evacuated, police said in a release.
The anonymous email claimed that "several bombs were placed in all of Amagansett's schools as well as every school in New York." It also demanded that an undisclosed amount of cash be delivered to an upstate address.
"Law enforcement subsequently conducted a search of the district property, where nothing suspicious was found," police said.
Town police are still investigating the incident, along with the Suffolk County Police Department and the New York State Police. School officials could not immediately be reached for comment on Wednesday.
At 9:44 a.m., Amagansett School parents were notified by text message about the bomb threat. Screenshots of the text messages shared with The Star indicate that some students were in the process of being bused home while others awaited pickup by their parents at St. Peter's Chapel next door. "Students will not be allowed back in the building," the district wrote.
An email was also sent to families at 11:06 a.m. by Maria Dorr, the school principal, stating that "law enforcement intelligence has deemed the threat to be non-credible; the email contained wording that was similar to those received by other districts in Suffolk County recently. Out of an abundance of caution, we evacuated the school and initiated an early dismissal."
On Monday, an email threat was received by the Southampton School District, according to 27east.com. All facilities there were also evacuated, and the threat was eventually deemed not credible.
