High school students in grades 8 through 12 can submit applications for New York State Summer School of the Arts programs in dance, choral studies, media arts, orchestral instrumentation, visual arts, and theater arts. Auditions begin on Jan. 5 at various state university centers and nonprofit arts centers throughout New York.
“Arts education is profoundly important and enriching for our students,” Betty A. Rosa, the chancellor of the New York Board of Regents, said in an announcement. “The New York State Summer School of the Arts is a remarkable program where students of different backgrounds come together to study, learn, and celebrate art. I encourage students from every area of the state to take advantage of this opportunity.”
For the ballet program specifically, students as young as sixth grade can apply. Application deadlines and materials vary for the different programs. For instance, theater and dance programs require headshot-style photographs, and musical programs require demo recordings. All students must be permanent, full-time residents of New York State to qualify for admission.
