Eric Casale, the longtime principal of the Springs School, formally resigned from his position on Monday after being on a leave of absence since late August.
Mr. Casale was originally appointed to the position in 2005 after a career in the New York City school system. His resignation Monday went without comment from the school board and administration.
At Springs, among Mr. Casale's initiatives were Family Fun Fridays, in which teachers refrained from assigning homework one weekend per month to encourage family togetherness. He also lobbied for a construction project to add more classrooms and updated facilities, a project that is currently underway at the school.
Prior to his tenure at Springs, Mr. Casale was a principal at P.S. 91 in the Bronx.
The terms of Mr. Casale's departure were not immediately known on Tuesday. When asked for comment, Debra Winter, the district superintendent, indicated she could not speak publicly about the settlement. A Freedom of Information request for documents related to his resignation is pending with the district. Mr. Casale could not immediately be reached for comment.
Christine Cleary, previously the assistant principal, has been acting as principal since Aug. 31, when the Springs School first made Mr. Casale's leave of absence public.
