The Amagansett School District has opted into a Suffolk County program intended to boost safety for students riding buses to and from school.

The Stop Arm Enforcement Program equips buses with cameras that can record cars that drive around a school bus that has its stop sign extended. Seth Turner, the Amagansett superintendent, said that Bus Patrol LLC owns the cameras and monitors the footage for offenders, and that the cameras will be installed by the office of the county executive.

"Should someone drive around the bus or do something that's a violation of law, those cameras could be used by the police agencies to provide tickets for those drivers," Mr. Turner said. "Hopefully we don't have that situation."

The Amagansett School also recently celebrated a ribbon-cutting for its two new playgrounds, which were completed in November. The playground equipment and installation cost the district $350,000, which came from a surplus account. "We would like to thank the community of Amagansett for supporting the referendum on June 9, 2020, which approved funding for the new playground," Mr. Turner said.
