Expressing concerns over the timeline of the district's major renovation and expansion project, the Springs School Board and administration on Monday postponed approving the official 2021-22 school calendar.
Debra Winter, the superintendent, pitched a calendar that would have had students starting school on Monday, Sept. 13, which is a few days later than the first day of school in the surrounding districts. The idea was to buy a little more time for the construction to wrap up and for teachers to ready their new classrooms, she said.
Pat Brabant, a board member, suggested that the district hold off on making a final decision until more construction progress is made. Barbara Dayton, the board president, agreed. "If there's no legal obligation to do this right now from the state's perspective, then I think waiting a little bit" is better, she said.
The discussion followed an announcement by Derek Knatz, a representative of Park East Construction, that the cold weather had delayed some important masonry work. He said it wasn't expected to disrupt the overall timeline because the pleasant weather in the fall had allowed crews to work ahead of schedule.
