Art at Home
In its online archive, the Parrish Art Museum of Water Mill has many kid-friendly studio art workshops. Among them are lessons on making aluminum foil sculptures, painting still lifes and landscapes, collage, and paper weaving. They are free of charge and can be viewed at parrishart.org/education/parrish-home-art-studios.
CMEE Activities
The Children's Museum of the East End in Bridgehampton also has a great online archive of fun videos for kids. They include baking and cooking, birdwatching, slime making, and do-it-yourself science activities with common household items. All videos can be found online at cmee.org/cmee-home. The museum is also open six days per week for in-person visits, which must be reserved in advance. More information is at cmee.org.
Nature Up Close
Frank Quevedo, the executive director of Bridgehampton's South Fork Natural History Museum, will lead a winter bird walk at Montauk Point for adults and kids ages 10 and up on Saturday at 9 a.m. The group will look for and learn about winter waterfowl. Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for children, or free for members. Binoculars have been recommended.
Also on Saturday, SoFo's Young Environmentalists Society will meet at 10 a.m. to work on projects and talk about active ways to help Mother Nature. The free program is for kids and teens ages 10 to 16, and Spanish-language support will be available. At 10:30 a.m. at the museum, there will be a vernal pool walk suitable for kids ages 8 and up, for an admission charge of $10 for adults and $7 for children who are not members.
SoFo is also sponsoring a behind-the-scenes tour at the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead on Saturday at 1 p.m. Participants will learn what it takes to keep the aquarium running and the marine life happy. The fee is $5 per person.
On Sunday, there will be a trail walk at Penny Pond off Route 24 in Hampton Bays, suitable for adults and children ages 8 and up. "You never know what you will see on a woodland walk in winter," SoFo says. Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for children, or free for members. All museum programs require advance registration, which can be done online at sofo.org or by calling 631-537-9735.
Valentine's Day Fun
The East Hampton Library's take-and-make project for teens this weekend is Valentine's Day suncatchers. Community service hours can be earned, as the finished projects will be given to senior citizens. Materials can be picked up at the library from 3 to 5 p.m. tomorrow, and suncatchers must be handed in on Monday.
On Wednesday at 4 p.m., children ages 9 to 11 can make Valentine's Day wreaths to keep for themselves or give to someone special. Craft kits can be picked up in the children's room ahead of the event, which will be streamed live on Google Meet. Supplies are limited, so sign-up ahead of time is required.
On Tuesday at 4 p.m., the library will host a representative of the Quogue Wildlife Refuge for an all-ages, virtual look into the world of nocturnal animals such as owls, snakes, and chinchillas. Sign-up for all library programs can be done online at easthamptonlibrary.org or by phone at 631-324-0222, extension 2, for children's activities and extension 5 for teen activities.
Project Most in Person
Towers made of cereal. Sand, sequins, and slime. Vintage buttons and yarn collages -- all coming up with Project Most. Activities are held each Saturday at the East Hampton Neighborhood House, in person, for children in three age groups: 3 and 4 years old, kindergarten through third grade, and fourth through sixth grade. Additional classes include conversational Spanish and children's fitness. Specific programs and times, along with sign-up information, can be accessed at projectmost.org.
