Nomination petitions will be available starting tomorrow for school district residents who are interested in running for open board of education seats. Petitions can be picked up in person from most district clerks' offices, and some schools may even make them available for download on their respective websites.
Candidates need a minimum of 25 signatures to certify that their names will appear on the ballot. They must be a qualified voter in their school district of residence for at least one continuous year prior to the election, which is on Tuesday, May 18, this year. Potential board members may not be employed within the school district where they are running for office.
There are board seats in contention this year in Montauk, Amagansett, Springs, East Hampton, Sag Harbor, Bridgehampton, Wainscott, and Sagaponack.
Hard copies of candidates' original petitions are due in to the district clerks by 5 p.m. on April 19, either by drop-off or by mail delivery. They cannot be emailed or faxed. More information is available online at bit.ly/3cF0W8b.
