A Basic Budget Breakdown for East Hampton

Thu, 04/22/2021 - 07:56

On May 18, East Hampton School District voters will have a chance to weigh in on a $75.16 million spending plan for the 2021-22 school year. The school board voted Tuesday night to adopt that budget, which carries a year-over-year spending increase of $1.28 million.

The associated tax-levy increase is within state limits at 2.87 percent, which is the maximum amount East Hampton could institute while still only needing a simple majority of voter approval.

A house with an assessed value of $6,000, which translates to a fair market value of about $1.03 million based on 2020's townwide assessment, will see taxes rise by about $80 for the year.

"We're hoping that [assessment] will be higher, because that will bring the tax rate down," Keith Rugen, the district's assistant superintendent for business, said by phone yesterday. He said the district expects to post more budget details tomorrow on its website, easthamptonschools.org. A fuller story will appear in a future edition.
