Richard Burns, the longtime superintendent of the East Hampton School District who retired in June, is back in action in a different capacity.

Mr. Burns, who was a special education teacher and department chairman for many years before becoming East Hampton's superintendent, has stepped into the role of interim director of pupil personnel services in the Bridgehampton School District. He succeeds Carlos Bermudez, who spent one year overseeing special education there before resigning in May. Mr. Bermudez's last day was Aug. 13.

The Bridgehampton School Board formally approved Mr. Burns's interim appointment at Wednesday night's meeting, along with resolutions adding Mr. Burns to committees overseeing special education and preschool special education.
