Registered voters in the Sag Harbor School District can cast their ballots Thursday on a proposal allowing the district to spend $3.325 million from its reserve on a land deal that would also involve a separate contribution from Southampton Town’s community preservation fund.
Voting hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the gym at Pierson Middle and High School.
School officials have said that buying the land — five wooded lots on Marsden Street that would be used for an athletic field — will not increase taxes because they already have the money set aside for such a purpose. The Southampton Town Board is considering whether to contribute $6 million from the C.P.F. toward the land deal.
The district has promised its residents ample opportunities to weigh in on the future development of the property. The referendum has emerged as controversial, with a group called Citizens of Sag Harbor funding a mail campaign that falsely states an artificial turf field is already in the works and that it would cost $26 million.
An online petition supporting the ballot measure had garnered more than 400 signatures as of Wednesday morning.
