Kids Culture for February 24, 2022

Thu, 02/24/2022 - 09:54
Sunday’s story time for kids at the John Jermain Memorial Library in Sag Harbor is all about dinosaurs.

A Magical Time

The Amagansett Library has invited children in prekindergarten through second grade to a unicorn-themed party on Saturday at 2 p.m. with stories, crafts, and party favors. The contact for registration is Evan Harris at [email protected].

Get Outdoors

Children 10 and up can join the South Fork Natural History Museum for a nature hike at Mooney Pond in Montauk on Saturday at 10 a.m. Participants will learn about both freshwater wetlands and the Atlantic Ocean, and will keep their eyes out for seals. Another hike, this one for ages 8 and up, will be on Sunday at 10 a.m. at Promised Land in Amagansett. The cost for both is $15 for adults and $10 for children; museum members can take part for free.

For kids ages 10 to 16, the Young Environmentalists Society will meet on Saturday at 10 a.m. There is no admission charge.

Dancing for Babies and Teens

On Saturday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., high school students are invited to a rare opportunity to hang out “after hours” at the East Hampton Library to play the video game Just Dance.

It’ll be the babies’ turn on Monday morning at 10:30 and 11:30, when the library’s colorful parachute will make a special appearance accompanied by silly songs and dancing. Both sessions are ideal for toddlers up to 3 years old. Also for this age group, there will be a simple, fun music lesson on Monday at 9:30 a.m. and Tuesday at 10:30 featuring shakers and bells.

On Sunday afternoon at 3, teens can earn community service hours by creating displays based on favorite books, characters, topics, or holidays.

Kids ages 3 to 6 are invited to a birthday party for the legendary Dr. Seuss on Wednesday from 4 to 5 p.m. Next Thursday at 4, children ages 7 to 10 can make pompom bookmarks.

All of the library’s programs require sign-up ahead of time. The phone number is 631-324-0222, extension 5, for young-adult programs and extension 2 for children’s programs. Registration can also be done through the library’s website.

Dinosaurs and Dragons

The theme of Sunday’s story time for kids at the John Jermain Memorial Library in Sag Harbor is dinosaurs. The program begins at 11 a.m. and participants must be accompanied by an adult. There will be a take-home craft so kids can make their own dinosaurs.

What magical adventures lie ahead for students in sixth grade and up? The library will host a Dungeons and Dragons game next Thursday from 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. Be sure to practice your dice-rolling skills ahead of time.

Sign-up can be done via the event calendar on the library’s website.

“Travel” the World

The Hampton Library in Bridgehampton will take kids ages 8 to 12 on field trips around the world tomorrow at 4 p.m. with Google Expeditions, a virtual reality program, all from the comfort of the children’s room. An email can be sent to [email protected] to sign up.

Fun With Project Most

Saturday’s lineup of playful science and art-inspired activities from Project Most include a split-pea sensory exploration session at 10:30 a.m. for children ages 3 and 4 and thermochromic slime-making at noon for kids in kindergarten through third grade. The cost for either class is $20.

Also Saturday, for ages 6 to 12, there will be an hour of high-energy games and activities that emphasize teamwork starting at 11 a.m. Admission is $15.

Project Most requires advance registration on its website, projectmost.org.
