The Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill has continued its longtime tradition of celebrating student artists with the annual Student Exhibition officially opening Sunday.
The show, now in its 65th year, features the work of more than 1,000 kids and teens from across the North and South Forks, including some who are home schooled and many who are enrolled in special education programs. The show encompasses many types of mediums, from painting to sculpture to photography.
Leading up to it, Eric Dever, the Parrish’s artist in residence, led workshops that culminated in the creation of a 54-foot-long mural, “A Visual Conversation,” which will be on display. Students each took a turn painting or drawing for 60 seconds before passing the project on to a classmate for another minute to “respond” to what had just been painted or drawn.
Cara Conklin-Wingfield, the museum’s education director, said in a release that the show highlights East End schools’ “flourishing arts community.”
“We hope the exhibition brings pride and joy to children and families, and stimulates a lifelong love of art,” she said.
The Student Exhibition opens to participants on Saturday with a preview session for elementary and middle schoolers from 1 to 3 p.m. and another for high schoolers from 3 to 5 p.m. Admission is free. The show runs through April 24. More information is at parrishart.org.
