A Fresh Take on ‘the Talk’

Thu, 04/21/2022 - 10:18

Talking to young people about sex and related issues is rarely easy, but a new series of programs hosted by OLA and Planned Parenthood aims to change that.

“Teens Take Back the Sex Talk” begins on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the East Hampton Village office of Organizacion Latino-Americana of Eastern Long Island. The topic will be consent. The series continues on May 11, when the topic will be healthy relationships, and on May 26 sexting will be addressed.

“We want to take some of the stigma, as much as we can, out of this conversation,” Minerva Perez, executive director of OLA, said this week. It will be a judgment-free zone where “you know you’re getting good info from a trusted resource. The internet is hit or miss, and honestly, you get a lot of bad along with the good.”

Dinner will be served at each session, which will include a question-and-answer period. Participants will receive a gift bag and earn community service hours. Teens can call or text 631-899-3441 to sign up, learn the location, or get additional information.
