Citizen Scientists at SoFo

It's a special time of year for the horseshoe crab, and on Saturday, the South Fork Natural History Museum will give adults and children ages 5 and up the chance to become citizen scientists on a nighttime beach walk to witness the crabs emerging from the water and depositing their eggs in the sand. The museum calls it "one of nature's most amazing seasonal wildlife events."

Tagging of horseshoe crabs, which helps scientists monitor their populations, will also take place. The free event, held in conjunction with Cornell Cooperative Extension, begins at 8:30 p.m. at Pike's Beach in Westhampton Beach.

Earlier that day, SoFo will host a walk through Vineyard Field, behind the museum in Bridgehampton, to search for and learn about black racer snakes. The program is for anyone age 5 and up, and costs $15 per adult and $10 per child. Museum members can attend for free.

On Sunday, SoFo will hold an all-ages trail cleanup at Clam Island Preserve in Southampton at 9 a.m. There will be a full-moon hike for all ages on Monday at 8:30 p.m. to witness the "Flower Moon," which draws its name from the abundant blooming of flowers at this time of year. Led by Dai Dayton of the Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt, registration for the free walk is by email to [email protected] (priority will be given to members of the Friends group).

SoFo requires advance registration for all of its programs. The phone number for sign-up and questions is 631-537-9735.
