What's a Salt Marsh?

The South Fork Natural History Museum wants kids to learn about the salt marsh, a type of coastal ecosystem "that holds many treasures" and diverse populations of fish, birds, and plants, educators there say.

On Saturday at 1:30 p.m., children ages 8 and up can take advantage of a field trip to a Southampton salt marsh (location to be announced upon registration) with LeighAnn Montaglione, one of the museum's environmental educators.

Advance registration for the free event is required, and can be done by calling 631-537-9735 or emailing [email protected].

Also on Saturday, SoFo and the Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt will team up for a leisurely, all-ages walk through open-field trails to enjoy the harvest moon, the nickname given by Indigenous people to the full moon that signifies when it's time to harvest corn. "At the peak of harvest, farmers can work late into the night by the light of this moon," SoFo says.

The event, which is free of charge but limited in enrollment capacity, begins at 8 p.m. Sign-up is by emailing [email protected].
