Springs Notebook: Learning About the Coast Guard

Thu, 10/24/2024 - 09:38
Joan Branche's third graders recently visited the Coast Guard station in Montauk.

One of the many things that makes Springs School special is the field trips teachers and their students go on. One particular field trip occurred recently in third grade. Students went to the Coast Guard Station in Montauk to learn about all of the important jobs the Coast Guard does.

Students learned how to spray the fire hose. The were given tours of the Coast Guard boats and learned about the different types of boats and what they are each used for.

Asked what the students learned from the field trip, a third grade teacher, Joan Branche, said that “They learned a lot about the Coast Guard and their jobs. They learned about service and how they serve day and night. They also learned how important the military is.”

Some of the students in Mrs. Branche’s class were asked what they enjoyed most about the field trip. Their answers were the girls vs. boys game with the fire hose, seeing how the Coast Guard service members live on the boats, and saving a person who went in the water with a dry suit on by tossing a life ring to him.

The students said they want to go back every year. Mrs. Branche has taken her students on this field trip multiple times and said
it is more fun every year.
