The Springs School Robotics Teams are getting ready to compete in a qualifying competition this weekend at William Floyd High School. The bus will leave Springs School at 5:30 a.m.

The teams have been practicing after school from 3:20 to 4:30 two days a week since Nov. 16. Later in the fall, they took their practice to another level with a practice competition, in Bethpage. The two teams are going to be competing against each other this weekend, but it’s friendly, and the opposing team members are friends, despite their competitive spirits.

Team one is the Thunder Bots, and team two is the Lightning Bots. Both teams were asked to create a robot made out of Legos, and each team had to code their robot to complete different tasks around a game board. Points are awarded based on how many missions the robot completes in two and a half minutes. The teams are also required to create an innovation project to help solve an existing problem in the art world.

Both teams struggled most with the innovation project because it is very open-ended, but they’re on a roll now! The teams are made up of a number of new innovators as well as veterans. The kids are so excited to compete in this upcoming competition because if they make it through, they will be invited to compete in the First Lego League Long Island Championships! To top it off, teams are expected to create an oral presentation for their robot design, their innovation project, and for the importance of First Lego League’s core values, which are discovery, impact, teamwork, innovation, inclusion, and fun! These Ospreys are sure to make Springs School proud!
