Springs School is having a sneaker drive and will accept donations of gently used sneakers until Feb. 29. The drive was thought up and organized by the Diversity Club as a way to raise money for the school while also donating to a good cause.

The school is partnering with GotSneakers.com, an organization that pays people to donate sneakers. The price depends on the condition the shoes are in and can be as much as $7 for a pair in excellent condition. The money raised will go toward future endeavors and activities for the Diversity Club and Springs School.

What does GotSneakers.com do with these donations? Well, it cleans them, and sells them for very low prices to people who don’t have as much money. If these sneakers are too beat up to be cleaned, they are recycled into pieces that the employees reuse. The Journalism Club had the opportunity to interview Victoria Firemark, the coordinator of Diversity Club, to learn more about the effort. She said that the idea was born when the Diversity students were thinking about how to be of service for Martin Luther King’s Birthday. The money would be raised for the school, and could help communities nationwide.

“Being of service means helping,” Mrs. Firemark said, “so any way you are able to help someone is a beautiful act of service.”

There are other ways to be of service too. You can donate food to the food pantry, donate clothes, help someone in need, like an elderly neighbor, help with raking, or read to a younger student.
