Springs School recently had some big wins at the Special Olympics, at which kids 8 to 13 with special needs competed in various sporting events.

So far the Springs team has had two competitions. On Feb. 3, it won one gold and one silver medal in a snowshoeing event in North Hempstead Park. On March 10, the team competed in a bowling event at the All Star bowling alley in Riverhead. This time, the athletes took home two gold medals and two silver medals.

On May 4, they will compete in a track and field event at Plainedge High School in North Massapequa.

Whitney Reidlinger, the head of the Special Olympics team and Springs School’s occupational therapist, said she likes “the ability to meet students from other schools and build friendships with them.”

The Special Olympics organizers are always looking for student volunteers to help out, so other students looking to earn community service hours and learn the joy of volunteering can contact Ms. Reidlinger.
