On March 18, eighth graders from Springs School visited Liberty Island and Ellis Island. They departed from school on Hampton Jitney buses  before the start of the official school day and returned well after dismissal. Students were able to see the Statue of Liberty and the National Museum of Immigration (Ellis Island).

The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of liberty and freedom for many citizens and immigrants. Eighth graders were able to see the statue and learn the history behind it. However, when it comes to Ellis Island, students learned that while it gave hope to immigrants for a better life, it also was a place of unfairness and discrimination.

“The field trip was an amazing opportunity which educated me on important moments of American history,” said eighth-grader Gabriela Alvarado. This trip was made possible by the school’s very generous Parent Teacher Association. In all, the field trip was successful, and gave eighth graders the opportunity to go to the place their ancestors may have passed through.
