Recently, the Springs School Diversity Club took a field trip to the local food pantry, and used its time there to make a difference in the community.

The members of the club took a five-minute bus ride from the school to the Springs Presbyterian Church, where the food pantry is located, and were given directions to help bag food for the next day, when volunteers would hand out the filled bags to people in need.

The members of the club were instructed to put different kinds of food in each bag, including canned corn, tomato sauce, pasta, cereal, oatmeal, and tuna fish. There were many canned goods included since they are easy to transport and are good for a long time.

Every member of the club worked to get all of the bags filled, which required patience and communication. In a two-hour time span, the volunteers managed to fill over 100 bags. They went back to school with a sense of pride, knowing they had helped their community.

Young people do a lot to serve the community, and the students in the Diversity Club are just one example. For people who want to become involved, food pantry organizers told students that they are always enthusiastic about having new helpers.
