Susan McGraw Keber is seeking a third term on the trustee board. She cited the trustees’ recently realized goal to stagger terms of the body’s nine members, which will start with the 2023 election.
“I’m very proud of the way the South Fork Wind agreement came to be,” she said. “I think we worked very well with the town in accomplishing the renewable energy promise that by 2030 we will be fossil-fuel free.”
Negotiations also yielded a five-year fisheries study. “We will be able to see the impacts of turbines on migratory fish, to see how this impacts them.”
She also pointed to her work with the mosquito larvae monitoring program in Accabonac Harbor, which has allowed Suffolk County to reduce and pinpoint its aerial application of larvicide there. “Osprey and dragonflies returned, beautiful indigenous plantings came back, and those [larval] hot spots started to grow in and disappear.”
Regarding Truck Beach, “I think the beach belongs to the people who live here,” she said. “I don’t believe in any privatization of any beach.”
“I am a steward for the waters, the most important thing that we have,” she added. “If we damage our aquifer, our waterways, harbors, or ponds, we have nothing that makes our community beautiful, safe, a place people want to come and visit and live. I’m acutely aware of the fragility of our environment, and am destined and hoping to make an impact for the children I will never know.”
