“I’ve always stood with the men and the women who earn their living on the water. I have a great deal of respect for them,” said Lona Rubenstein when asked what motivated her to run for the office.
A published novelist who is a former philosophy professor at the City University of New York, Ms. Rubenstein also held the elected office of town assessor in the late 1980s. One of her strengths is research, she said; another is that she never says “anything negative” about other people, including her opponents. She is an Amagansett resident who previously lived in East Hampton, beginning in 1965.
Ms. Rubenstein, who has been active in town political affairs for many years, estimates she has helped at least 29 candidates get elected. At one time she was active in a campaign to help commercial fishermen achieve a legislative victory in Albany over striped bass regulations.
On the subject of Truck Beach access rights, Ms. Rubenstein said, “I’d like to bring the people together and sit and talk. You don’t really know what’s involved unless you sit down with the people and hear them.”
