Wind Farm Surveys Begin on L.I.R.R. Right of Way

Thu, 03/04/2021 - 10:18

Developers of the South Fork Wind farm began performing property boundary surveys on Long Island Rail Road rights of way this week.

Orsted U.S. Offshore Wind and Eversource Energy plan to land the wind farm's export cable at the ocean beach at the end of Beach Lane in Wainscott, from which it would travel on a subterranean path to a Long Island Power Authority substation in East Hampton. The surveys are to confirm right-of-way limits at each L.I.R.R. road crossing along the onshore cable route.

Surveyors are taking measurements and identifying the true property boundaries. Surveys are to occur at eight locations, including on Daniel's Hole Road, Wainscott Northwest Road, Stephen Hand's Path, and Buckskill Road.

The work is being performed by a two-person crew with two vehicles. Typical land survey equipment is being used, a spokeswoman for the developers said, including a tripod, GPS units, metal detectors, shovels, and brightly colored flagging. While no work is planned on private property, surveyors may cross adjacent properties to access pertinent locations.

The work is to last approximately two weeks, conducted Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Ultra Runners Tackle Grand Canyon

The so-called Rim to Rim to Rim trail involves descending 4,500 feet down the South Rim, crossing the canyon floor and the Colorado River, and then running up the nearly 8,000-foot North Rim, and back.

Christmas Birds: By the Numbers

Cold, still, quiet, and clear conditions marked the morning of the Audubon Christmas Bird Count in Montauk on Dec. 14. The cold proved challenging, if not for the groups of birders in search of birds, then certainly for the birds.
