Rooftop Solar Is on the Rise

Thu, 02/10/2022 - 11:08

One hundred and sixty-five rooftop solar systems have been installed in East Hampton Town since the Solarize East Hampton program was started in 2018, with 63 completed in 2021, the town announced last week.

Cumulatively, the solar panels generate about 1.8 megawatts of power, according to a statement from Town Hall, contributing significantly to East Hampton’s renewable, clean electricity production and helping the town achieve its 100-percent renewable energy goal. Combined, this generation exceeds the 1.1 megawatts produced at the Accabonac Solar Farm, “demonstrating that individual rooftop installations can have a significant impact on the community’s production of renewable energy,” the announcement said.

The town’s partnership with GreenLogic Energy offers group rates below market prices and streamlines the process for residential and commercial property owners to go solar. In addition to free solar energy assessments, tax credits, financing, and discounts on the solar installation, owners who go solar also save on utility costs.

Speaking of his own residence, Supervisor Peter Van Scoyoc said in the statement, “We installed solar panels on our roof through the town’s Solarize East Hampton program in 2018. Since then, we have produced more electricity than we have used, and saved over $5,000.”

Those interested in adding solar panels to their roofs can visit energizeeh.org, where a form can be filled out to start the process. Those unable or unwilling to install their own solar arrays have the option of subscribing to a community solar project on Long Island. The Energize East Hampton initiative also includes free home energy assessments, green heating and cooling, energy storage, and other programs.

The Sweet Smell of Nostalgia at Sagaponack General

Stepping into the new Sagaponack General Store, which reopened yesterday after being closed since 2020, is a sweet experience, and not just because there’s a soft-serve ice cream station on the left and what promises to be the biggest penny candy selection on the South Fork on your right, but because it’s like seeing an old friend who, after some struggle, made it big. Really, really big.
