The Federal Aviation Administration has approved East Hampton Town’s application to provide “special procedures” for instrument landings at the private-use East Hampton Town Airport that is to open on May 19 on the site of the existing East Hampton Airport.

With the September 2021 expiration of federal grant assurances, the town regained the ability to regulate the airport. The town board, with its outside counsel, consultants, and the F.A.A., have developed restrictions and curfews to address complaints about traffic, noise, and safety, as well as environmental concerns.

East Hampton Airport is to close on May 17 before reopening with a new name and with a prior-permission-required rule in place, under which advance clearance will be required before a pilot can use the airport.

F.A.A. approval of the special procedures, which are not publicly available, came on Friday, according to a statement from Town Hall. The approval confirms that all aircraft safety and operational capabilities that have been available at the existing airport will be available at East Hampton Town Airport upon its opening.

Aircraft operators must have prior approval and F.A.A. authorization to use the procedures. The town is allowing them to apply to the F.A.A. for use free of charge, as long as the operator completes the full application packet provided by the town.

Those with questions regarding the application process have been asked to contact Jim Brundige, the airport manager, at [email protected] or 631-537-1130.
