Town Seeks Ideas for Senior Citizens Center

Thu, 07/14/2022 - 11:02

East Hampton Town is asking residents to weigh in on the new senior citizens center to be constructed at 403 Abraham’s Path in Amagansett, with results to inform the design of the center and the programs offered there.

A survey was initiated on Tuesday and will continue through July 26. It is offered in English and Spanish, and can be accessed at surveymonkey.com/r/ehampton. All residents have been invited to respond, but only one survey per person should be submitted.

The town board voted last year to acquire the seven-acre property for the new senior citizens center, part of a 14.3-acre, residentially zoned parcel adjacent to an undeveloped portion of the town-owned Terry King ball field complex. The new center will replace the existing senior citizens center on Springs-Fire place Road in East Hampton, a building that is more than 100 years old.

In December, the town hired R2 Architecture, which has designed public, commercial, and civic spaces including the University of Chicago Child Development Center, the Times Square Visitor Center, various senior and community centers, and many New York City retail stores and cafes.

A community engagement program began in May with a series of virtual and in-person listening sessions for current and future users of the center to share ideas and feedback. R2 Architecture officials spoke with more than 120 residents, current seniors center users, community members, staff, and elected officials to shape a vision for the new center. The design team is now analyzing the data collected during those sessions.
