East Hampton Town Republican Committee

The East Hampton Town Republican Committee will launch its 2023 campaign next Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Blend restaurant at 367 Three Mile Harbor Road in East Hampton.

Tickets are $150, or $100 for committee members. Sponsorship opportunities are available for $250, $500, and $1,500 and grant the sponsor two, four, and 10 tickets, respectively.

The committee has named Gretta Leon as its candidate for supervisor, and Scott Smith and Michael Wootton as candidates for the town board in the Nov. 7 election. It has also named candidates for town trustee: Jim Grimes, an incumbent and deputy clerk, Patrice Dalton, who like Mr. Grimes is also endorsed by the East Hampton Democratic Committee, Kurt Kappel, John Dunning, and Mark Edwards. Brian Lester is the committee’s candidate for town justice.

Other candidates to be endorsed by both the Republican and Democratic Committees are Stephen Lynch, the incumbent highway superintendent, and Jeanne Nielsen and Jill Massa, the incumbent assessors.

Manny Vilar, the committee’s chairman, is the Republican Party’s candidate for the Suffolk County Legislature. Legislator Bridget Fleming, who was the Democratic candidate for New York’s First Congressional District last year, will not seek re-election. Mr. Vilar is expected to face Ann Welker, a Southampton Town trustee endorsed by Ms. Fleming.

Exploring a ‘New Land Ethic’

“What is a new land ethic?” Stephan Van Dam, the president of ChangeHampton, asked rhetorically. The idea, he said, is “to disrupt our relationship with the natural world and overcome and change our attitude towards nature — the idea that we need to dominate nature. We need to disrupt that.”
