Expect delays on Route 114 between East Hampton and Sag Harbor from Monday through Friday, July 26, as New York State creates new turning lanes at Goodfriend Drive.

This is a part of a $27 million transportation investment laid out by Gov. Kathy Hochul in April. According to an announcement at the time from the governor's office, the main goal of the work of the intersection is “removing turning vehicles from the main line of traffic and allowing for a smoother flow.”

Although the major work will begin in the upcoming days, there was some preliminary work already being done this week to the curbs around Goodfriend Drive by the New York State Department of Transportation’s multi-location safety enhancement contractor. According to an email from the D.O.T., “the contractor anticipates starting the corresponding paving work next week," and completing it "before the start of the 2024-2025 school year.”

In addition to this project, there is more construction planned for the intersection of Route 114 and Stephen Hand's Path later this year. This project will add left turning lanes in each direction, make A.D.A. pedestrian accommodations, and enhanced traffic signals. There is no planned start date for that work, but the Department of Transportation expects it to be completed by February 2025.

“The improvements on NY114 at Stephen Hands Path and at Goodfriend Drive will substantially improve both traffic safety and traffic flow in the Town of East Hampton,” Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr. said in the April release from the governor's office. “In particular, the improvements at NY114 and Goodfriend Drive will make it safer for parents and students traveling each school day to the Ross School."
