The National Weather Service is seeking college students who are interested in weather-related careers, offering them an up-close volunteer experience at its office in Upton, on the campus of Brookhaven National Laboratory.
"Students will learn many aspects of the day-to-day operations of the office, including warning operations and forecast creation as well as observation and product quality control," the weather service said in an announcement. There will also be research opportunities. "This will give students the opportunity to determine whether a career with the National Weather Service may be right for them."
Students will spend 10 to 20 hours per week at the Upton office beginning in late May. To be eligible, a student must be enrolled in a meteorology or atmospheric science program as a graduate student or undergraduate who has completed at least their sophomore year.
Interested candidates should send a cover letter describing their interest in volunteering, along with a resume, two references, and college transcript, by March 1 to Dave Radell, the science and operations officer, via email at [email protected].
