The first blast of snow in eastern Suffolk County was not quite enough for a snow day, but icy roads caused a two-hour delay at two South Fork schools on Tuesday morning.
The East End received one to two inches of snow overnight, but temperatures in the low 30s were reason for caution on the roads.The East Hampton Town Police Department asked drivers to be careful. "First winter weather coating of snow making roadways hazardous in some areas for the morning commute," the department posted on its Facebook page.
In Sagaponack, a vehicle hit a utility pole at about 5:15 a.m. Montauk Highway was closed in both directions from the Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike in Bridgehampton to Sagg Road in Sagaponack as of 7:20 a.m.
The Amagansett and Montauk School Districts decided on a two-hour delayed opening, while the East Hampton School District was going to open on time. Jack Perna, the Montauk superintendent, announced that buses from Montauk to East Hampton High School would be delayed and cautioned those driving to school from his district to take it slow and said that East Hampton administrators know students from Montauk will be late.
The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook for Long Island as a band of moderate to heavy snow continued to move south across New London and Middlesex Counties in Connecticut toward eastern Suffolk early Tuesday morning, though the band moved out of the area around daybreak.
Stephen Lynch, the town highway superintendent, told his followers on Facebook to allow for extra time Tuesday morning. "As you go out and about this morning please proceed with caution as roads may be slippery because they are covered with snow. The highway crews are out sanding and salting roads." He thanked people in advance for their patience and cooperation.
Tuesday's high will be around 40 degrees, but it will be breezy with a northwest wind 17 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 33. The wind chill values will be between 20 and 30 — so bundle up.
There were no reported delays on the Long Island Rail Road early Tuesday.
