The Southampton Town Board has put out a poll in the hope of gauging public opinion on banning the sale, distribution, and release of balloons within the town.

The town's sustainability committee floated the proposal at the town board's works session on Jan. 9. The proposal, as it stands now, includes balloons -- including but not limited to plastic, latex, and Mylar -- filled with any type of lighter-than-air gas, including helium, for private or public use.

The two-question poll is posted on the town's website. It will be available for residents to take until Friday, Feb. 14, at 4 p.m.
