A visit with Santa at the Montauk Firehouse last year
Jane Bimson

The Montauk Chamber of Commerce and the Montauk Visitors Center will hold a Montauk Holiday market on the downtown green on Saturday from noon to 4:30 p.m. Santa will be there from 3 to 4 p.m., Sarah Conway and the Playful Souls will provide holiday tunes, and there will be cookie decorating and ornaments to personalize for children, free hot chocolate and candy canes provided by Hampton Coffee, and local crafters and artisans selling tables full of holiday gifts.

The Montauk Library has a Marine Toys for Tots box where people can drop drop off presents for children in need. All gifts must be dropped off by Wednesday. The library is also collecting mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves for children and adults through Dec. 31.

Sally's Zoom Book Club will be discuss "A Children's Bible" by Lydia Miller from 1 to 2 p.m. on Sunday. The book to read for January is "Anxious People" by Fredrik Backman.

The Christmas Giving Tree is up in the lobby of St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church. Cards on the tree list things people in the community need. Those feeling generous can buy an item on the card and return it to the tree wrapped and with the card attached.

The Montauk Community Church is now open for indoor worship on Sunday at 10 a.m.

The Montauk Fire Department has placed its annual gift boxes on the green in front of the gazebo and is asking for donations of new toys and games. Santa will arrive by fire truck at the firehouse on Sunday and will be on hand from 1 to 3 p.m. Children will receive a stocking full of candies and toys to be handed out by his helpers, but Covid-19 concerns mean there will be no time on Santa's lap.

Deep History in Sag Harbor Headstones’ Restoration

While Captain Beebee’s headstone now sits pristine atop the hill next to the Old Whalers Church, the rest of the family’s six plots sit in disrepair. Recently, however, the museum received a $10,000 grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, which will allow for the restoration of the remaining headstones.
